What is Ear Wax and Why Does it Build Up?
Ear wax is completely natural. It is produced by the ear canal to protect, clean and lubricate the ear. In most people it works its way out on its own but for some, it builds up faster than it can clear, causing a blockage.
Certain factors make build-up more likely:
-
Using cotton buds (which push wax deeper).
-
Wearing hearing aids or earphones regularly.
-
Having naturally narrow or curved ear canals.
-
Producing more wax than average.
It is more common than most people realise and very easily treated.
Signs You Might Need Ear Wax Removal
You may have a build up if you are experiencing any of the following:
-
A blocked or full feeling in one or both ears.
-
Muffled or reduced hearing.
-
Ringing or buzzing in the ear (tinnitus).
-
Earache or mild discomfort.
-
A feeling that sounds are echoing inside your head.
-
Itchiness inside the ear canal.
If you are unsure whether wax is cause, we can assess this at your appointment before any treatment is carried out
What To Expect
The Procedure
A small, gentle suction tip is placed at the entrance of the ear canal and the wax is carefully removed. Painless, quick, and over in minutes.
Is It Safe?
Microsuction is the gold standard for ear wax removal - recommended by ENT specialists and far safer than ear syringing or irrigation.
Do I Need To Prepare?
We recommend using olive oil drops for 3-5 days before your appointment to soften the wax. This helps ensure the best possible result in a single visit.
FAQs
Does it hurt?
Microsuction is generally painless. Most patients feel a mild suction sensation and may hear the sound of the device which can feel strange but is not uncomfortable. The procedure is over quickly and patients leave with immediate relief in most cases.
How long does the appointment take?
Most appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes. If both ears need treating or wax is particularly compacted, it may take a little longer but you will never feel rushed.
Do I need to use olive oil drops beforeheand?
We strongly recommend it. Using olive oil drops for 3-5 days before your appointment softens the wax and significantly improves the chances of clearing everything in shingle visit. If you forget or haven’t had time still attend - we can usually still treat you.
What if only one ear needs treating?
No problem at all. We will assess both ears at your appointment and only treat what needs treating. (£45 for single ear, £65 for both ears)
Can you treat me if I have perforated ear drum or have had ear surgery?
In many cases yes, but we will always assess carefully before proceeding. If there is any uncertainty we will let you know before treatment begins. Your safety always comes first.
How much does it cost?
Ear examination £15
Single Ear £45
Both Ears £65

Not referred on to someone else weeks later.
We use professional microsuction equipment with an endoscope camera, so the ear canal is fully visualised throughout the procedure. No guesswork. No prodding in the dark.
